Between the late seventh and mid eighth centuries, evidence for craft-working and specialist raw material production is more limited than for subsequent periods. This is probably due to the fact that the deposited material relates more to activities undertaken in the vicinity of the excavated area. Small-scale textile manufacture is indicated by the recovery of heckle teeth, a spindle-whorl, a pin-beater, shears and a small number of loom-weights. The presence of small quantities of smelting and smithing slag, hammer-scale, and a crucible fragment with copper and zinc residues, also reflects some iron-working and non-ferrous metalworking (Starley forthcoming; Mortimer forthcoming; Wastling forthcoming). In addition, an axe-head and punches indicate wood-working and metalworking.
